Skovgaard Energy establishes joint venture with Japanese Sumitomo Corporation

Skovgaard Energy is taking another ambitious step in the green transition by
establishing a joint venture with the Japanese company Sumitomo Corporation. The partnership aims, among others, to produce sustainable aviation fuel – known as SAF –, biogas and biogenic CO2 through the newly established company, North Sky A/S, which will be based in Northwest Jutland.
Sumitomo Corporation, one of the world's largest trading and investment companies, is now joining forces with Skovgaard Energy in Lemvig. They have established a joint venture for the purpose of upgrading biogas from Maabjerg Biogas and green hydrogen from Energy Hub Holstebro to sustainable aviation fuel.
The partnership with Sumitomo Corporation is a crucial step in our strategy to create innovative and scalable solutions within green energy. Their investment and
commitment to the project underscore the potential of our technology and approach," says Bjarke Mollerup Bitsch, Director Business Development at Skovgaard Energy.
Sumitomo Corporation has closely followed Skovgaard Energy’s development and visited the company’s Power-to-Ammonia plant in Climate Park Ramme. The area has attracted several companies that see great opportunities in being part of this development.
"Our experience from the Power-to-X plant in Ramme has provided us with critical
insights that now enable a larger-scale expansion. We are proud that Sumitomo
Corporation recognizes the value of our work and has chosen Northwest Jutland as the key location for the development of future aviation fuel," says Technical Director at Skovgaard Energy, Pat A Han.
Production will take place in connection with Energy Hub Holstebro, where electrolysisbased hydrogen, green energy from Climate Park Northwest Jutland, and biogas from Maabjerg Biogas will be combined to create the new sustainable aviation fuel.
"This project demonstrates how we can integrate renewable energy with industry and the transport sector. SAF plays a key role in reducing the aviation sector’s CO₂ footprint, and we see Energy Hub Holstebro as a global reference point for this development," says Pat A Han.
The partnership is built on a shared ambition to accelerate the sector coupling of the
green transition. With Sumitomo Corporation’s long-term investment and global
industrial network, combined with Skovgaard Energy’s agility and local presence, a strong alliance is formed.
"Sumitomo Corporation is not just investing in a project – they are investing in a vision. Together, we are combining local expertise with global market knowledge to drive the development of future sustainable energy solutions," says Bjarke Mollerup Bitsch.
As part of the partnership, the joint venture North Sky A/S will be established in Northwest Jutland. The partners are investing in Maabjerg Biogas and the hydrogen project in Energy Hub Holstebro.
"This partnership ensures that the green energy we produce in Northwest Jutland is
refined locally and creates jobs and economic growth in the region. This is not just a big step for the project, but also for us as a company," says Bjarke Mollerup Bitsch.
"We are now entering an important process to ensure that the projects are realized in a way that creates maximum value – both for the climate and for the local community," concludes Bjarke Mollerup Bitsch.
